Ph.D. Program

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a vibrant Ph.D. programme in core areas of Mechanical Engineering including thermo-fluid sciences and engineering, robotics and dynamical systems, and solid mechanics. The faculty members and the students are engaged in groundbreaking scientific research and technology development. Some of the recent research projects include:

  • • Development of fuel cell systems for naval applications
  • • Development of a novel wearable cable-driven leg exoskeleton for robotic neurorehabilitation
  • • Fundamental studies on nonlinear acoustic metamaterials
  • • Characterizing combustion and propulsive performances of next-generation rocket propellants
  • • Design, dynamic study and control of a cable driven flexible robotic manipulator
  • • Laser-induced surface modifications to improve mechanical properties of metals
  • • Investigation of structure-property-performance relations in hierarchical 3-D lattice structures

The PhD programme is an enriching and intensive academic programme, in which students do a set of courses to gain in-depth knowledge in a particular specialization in mechanical engineering as well as work on a cutting edge research problem over a period of 4-5 years during which they learn to solve challenging problems and groom themselves to be independent researchers.

The department provides a stimulating environment for the students, where interactions between faculty and students are informal and friendly, and students are given academic independence. IITGN does not encourage artificial walls between students, faculty, and postdocs and the thrust is towards collective learning. Further, IITGN encourages interdisciplinary knowledge exchanges. A student at our institute, in addition to gaining expertise in the particular field, is also typically encouraged to interact with members from other disciplines.

Apart from the regular PhD programme, the institute offers Start-Early Ph.D. fellowship to bright undergraduate students to directly join the PhD programme.
